Kojonup joins No-GM list

  • Farm for the Future

23 April 2009

“Kojonup Shire Council has unanimously voted to ask Minister Redman to hold fire on GM canola in the district,” said Greens MLC for the South West Region, Paul Llewellyn.

“This means that 40% of the so-called ‘trial’ plantings are now in Shires where the Minister has been expressly asked not to allow GM canola at this time.

“Minister Redman seems hell bent on pushing ahead with trials against the wishes of farming communities.

“Whilst he claims to listen to and care about country views, Minister Redman is showing himself to be a pawn of big business, which will be the only winner in this.

“The fact is, the Minister knows that if he respects the will of local communities, his ‘trials’ are dead in the water,” Mr Llewellyn said.

“We will continue to support local communities to have their voices heard and their wishes acted on.”

“Kojonup has specifically notified the Minister of its “preference to remain Genetically Modified free with respect to the growing, storage, handling, seed cleaning and transport of Genetically Modified canola until a meeting is held with the Minister for Agriculture and Food, and his staff, on this issue”.”
