No New Coal

On 5 June 2008, Paul introduced a Bill to State Parliament which would, if passed, stop the State Government from approving any more conventional coal-fired power stations.

The WA Government says it wants to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 60 per cent, but in 2008 was assessing three new coal-fired power stations that would increase emissions by 10 per cent.

If approved, these power stations will lock in high greenhouse gas emissions for 30-50 years.

An emissions trading scheme is proposed for 2010, but we need to take action now.
